Colombo Airport Transfers: How Long the Drive Really Takes

Quick Takeaways: Colombo Airport Transfer Guide

  • Galle is about 2 h 15, Kandy about 3 h 15, Sigiriya about 3 h 35
  • Allow 45 minutes to 1 h 45 to clear the terminal on top
  • Landing after about 7 pm usually means staying near the airport

Measured drive times from Bandaranaike International Airport to the places people actually go, plus the hour nobody plans for between landing and leaving the terminal.

Most arrival plans in Sri Lanka fail before the car moves. The flight lands mid-morning, the itinerary says Kandy by lunchtime, and nobody counted the queue at immigration or the fact that the road climbs through forty towns on the way.

The distances are short and the drives are not. Kandy is the shortest of the three common transfers and the second longest journey, because almost none of it is expressway. Galle is the furthest in kilometres and the quickest to reach.

This guide sets out what each transfer actually takes, measured rather than estimated, and what to add for the terminal itself.

The hour between landing and leaving

Every transfer plan starts with a number nobody writes down: how long it takes to get from the aircraft door to the car. At Bandaranaike International it runs anywhere from about forty-five minutes on a quiet morning to the better part of two hours when several wide-bodies land in the same window.

Immigration is the variable. Baggage is usually quick, customs is usually a formality, and the walk to the car park is short. What stretches the time is arriving behind three other long-haul flights, which happens most mornings between about six and nine.

Money and a local SIM are both available in the arrivals hall, and both are faster there than anywhere you will stop later in the day. If you want either, say so before you land so the time is planned rather than discovered.

Why Kandy takes longer than Galle

Kandy sits 114 km from the airport. Galle sits 152 km away. Kandy takes about an hour longer to reach, and the reason is the road rather than the distance.

The run south uses the airport expressway to Colombo and then the Southern Expressway almost the whole way, so it behaves like motorway driving anywhere. The run to Kandy is A-road that climbs through one town after another, where an average of 35 km/h across the whole journey is entirely normal.

Sigiriya is the longest of the common transfers at around three and a half hours across the dry zone. It is also the one most worth breaking with a stop, because arriving at the Cultural Triangle already tired is a poor way to start a trip built around an early climb.

  • Galle: about 2 h 15 for 152 km, mostly expressway
  • Kandy: about 3 h 15 for 114 km, mostly A-road
  • Sigiriya: about 3 h 35 for 146 km across the dry zone
  • Colombo: about 45 minutes for 32 km, almost entirely expressway

When to stay near the airport instead

Sri Lanka takes a great many long-haul arrivals in the evening and the small hours, and the honest advice for those is often not to drive straight out.

A long transfer after dark is perfectly safe and gets driven every night of the year. What it is not is scenic. You will see nothing of the country on your first journey through it, and arriving at a small guesthouse near midnight is awkward for everyone involved.

Negombo sits fifteen minutes from the terminal and exists largely for this purpose. One night there, then a start after breakfast, costs a single hotel night and buys a whole day of daylight travel. For anything beyond about a two-hour transfer landing after seven in the evening, it is usually the better trade.

What to arrange before you fly

A transfer booked in advance is a different experience from one negotiated at the airport, and the difference is almost entirely about what happens when the flight is late.

Give your operator the flight number rather than just the landing time. A tracked flight means the driver arrives when the aircraft does, not when the schedule said it would, and a two-hour delay costs you nothing instead of becoming an argument about waiting time.

Agree the price in writing before you travel. Arrivals halls are a poor place to discover what something costs, and a fixed figure agreed from home removes the one part of the arrival that reliably sours the first hour.

colombo airport transfer — common questions

How long is the drive from Colombo airport to Galle?

About 2 hours 15 minutes for 152 km. It is the longest of the common transfers in distance and among the quickest in time, because the airport expressway and then the Southern Expressway cover almost the whole route.

How long does it take to get from Colombo airport to Kandy?

About 3 hours 15 minutes for 114 km. Kandy is closer than Galle and takes an hour longer, because the road is A-road climbing through towns rather than expressway.

How long does it take to clear Colombo airport?

Between about 45 minutes and 1 hour 45 minutes from landing to leaving the terminal. Immigration is the variable; it depends on how many long-haul flights arrived in the same window.

Should I travel on the night I land in Sri Lanka?

For short transfers, yes. For anything over about two hours landing after 7 pm, staying near the airport in Negombo and starting after breakfast is usually better — you see the country in daylight and avoid a midnight check-in.
