Kandy Day Tour: Temple, Culture, and Scenic Stops

Kandy was the final capital of independent Sri Lanka, holding out in the hills long after the coastal areas had fallen to European powers. That history is not incidental — it explains why the city still feels like the cultural centre of the country rather than simply another large town.

It sits in a bowl of hills around a lake built by the last king, and the setting does a great deal of work. Arriving from the lowlands, the air is noticeably cooler and the pace slower.

For visitors, Kandy is usually about one thing above all others, but the city rewards those who stay long enough to see past it.

The Sri Dalada Maligawa houses a relic of the Buddha and is among the most important Buddhist sites anywhere. It is an active place of worship first and a visitor attraction second, and the experience is much better if you approach it in that order.

Time your visit around one of the daily ceremonies. Outside them the temple is a beautiful building; during one it is something else entirely, with drumming, a moving crowd of worshippers carrying lotus flowers, and a genuine sense of occasion.

Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered — and be prepared to remove shoes. Expect crowds during ceremonies; that is not a flaw in the experience but most of what makes it memorable.

The lake walk is the simplest pleasure here and the one most day trips skip. A full circuit takes about an hour, is flat, and gives you the temple from across the water as well as a view of ordinary Kandy life.

The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, just outside the city, are among the finest in Asia and deserve more than the token hour they usually get. The avenue of palms and the giant Javan fig are worth the visit on their own.

The central market is worth an hour for spices, fruit and the ordinary business of a working city, and the viewpoints in the surrounding hills give you the whole bowl at once, particularly good toward the end of the day.

Evening dance shows are widely offered and widely debated. They are staged for visitors, condensed, and not the same as seeing these dances in their original context.

That said, the drumming is genuinely skilled, the costumes are spectacular, and the fire-walking finale is memorable. Treated as an introduction rather than an authentic ritual, it is an enjoyable hour and children in particular tend to love it.

If you would rather have the real thing, the annual Esala Perahera in the summer months is one of Asia's great processions — elephants in full regalia, dancers, torchbearers, and enormous crowds. It is worth planning a trip around if your dates allow.

Its position makes it a natural hinge in a longer route.

If you are coming from Colombo for the day, leave early. Traffic on the approach roads is unpredictable and a late start compresses everything at the far end.

Aim to be at the temple for a ceremony rather than arriving at whatever time you happen to get there, and build the rest of the day around that fixed point.

An overnight in Kandy changes the visit considerably. The city in the early morning and the evening, once the day visitors have gone, is a much quieter and more likeable place than it is at midday.
