The one thing to time
Seeing a Train Cross the Nine Arch Bridge
The bridge is impressive empty and unforgettable with a train on it, and the difference between the two is entirely a matter of when you stand there.
- Roughly six crossings a day
- Published times cluster around 6:00–6:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am, early afternoon, 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm. Different guides list different sets, which tells you how much faith to put in any of them.
- Trains run late
- Sri Lankan trains are not punctual and nobody pretends otherwise. Arrive 20 to 30 minutes before a published time and accept that it may be another half hour. Your driver will have the day's actual position better than any website.
- Where to stand
- There is the viewpoint above and the track-level approach. The viewpoint gives the whole span with the jungle behind it; track level gives the arches. You cannot have both on one crossing.
On foot
Little Adam's Peak, and Why Not Ella Rock
Two walks get mentioned in the same breath and they are not remotely the same undertaking. Only one of them fits a day trip from the coast.
- Little Adam's Peak
- About 2 km from the main road and roughly 40 minutes to an hour each way, on a clear path with a lot of steps near the top. Easy enough for most people, and the one this tour includes.
- Ella Rock
- Longer, steeper, poorly signposted and easy to lose. It needs most of a morning and is not realistic on a day trip that also drives three to four hours each way from the south coast.
- Ravana Falls and the viewpoint
- The falls are a roadside stop on the way up, and the day finishes at the Ella Rock viewpoint looking back down the gap. Neither needs a hike.
