Handunugoda Tea Estate

Open 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. The estate is known for Virgin White Tea, picked so that the leaf is never touched by hand — a picker who manages 23 kg of ordinary black tea in a day gets through about 150 g of this. A tour of the plantation, the old factory machinery and a tasting is published at around LKR 1,000 a head.

Habaraduwa Turtle Hatchery

A hatchery founded in 1986 to protect eggs from poachers and release the young. Be aware that visitor reviews of hatcheries along this coast are genuinely mixed on animal welfare, with criticism of small tanks and of handling the hatchlings. We will take you if you want to go; we will also tell you honestly what you are likely to see.

Natural Silk Factory

Handloom weaving on the road into Galle. A short stop, and one of the few places on the route where you watch something being made rather than sold.

Galle Fort

The day ends inside the walls. The Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, and it is still a lived-in town rather than a preserved monument. The ramparts are best in the last hour of light.

What the tradition was

Stilt fishing grew up along this stretch of coast within living memory, with fishermen perched on a single pole driven into the reef, working the shallows at dawn and dusk.

What it mostly is now

Commercial fishing moved on and the practice has largely stopped being a living. At the roadside spots near Koggala what you generally see is men climbing the poles to be photographed, and asking for a fee afterwards — reported at anywhere from about LKR 1,000 to LKR 3,000.

How we handle it

We stop, because the poles and the setting are genuinely photogenic and most people want the picture. What we will not do is tell you it is an untouched tradition. Agree the fee before anyone climbs, and treat it as paying for a portrait rather than witnessing a craft.

If you want the real thing

Early morning, well away from the tour-bus pull-ins, is the only realistic chance — and even then it is rare. Say so when you book and we will plan the day around first light.
