Sri Lanka packs an unusual amount of variety into short distances, which matters more on a honeymoon than on most trips. You can spend the first part of a fortnight in the hills under a blanket at night, and the second part barefoot on the south coast, without ever facing a long internal flight.

That variety gives a honeymoon a natural arc. Somewhere atmospheric and cool to begin, somewhere warm and slow to end, and a few days of something memorable in between. It is a shape that suits the occasion, and it happens to be easy to build here.

The other thing in its favour is privacy. Beyond the handful of famous sites, much of the island is uncrowded, and it is genuinely easy to arrange days where you are not sharing the view with anyone.

Changing hotel every night means packing every morning, arriving somewhere new every afternoon, and never quite settling. Three nights somewhere lovely is worth considerably more than three single nights in three good places, and it costs less in transfers.

Starting in the hills is a deliberate choice that pays off. The tea country around Ella and Nuwara Eliya is cool, green and quiet, and the change from a long-haul flight into that landscape is dramatic in the best way.

The train through the hill country is the obvious set piece and deserves its reputation. It is slow, the windows are open, and the views through the tea estates are genuinely extraordinary. Ride the good section and treat the journey as the activity rather than transit.

Evenings up here are cool enough for a fire in some properties, which is a novelty in a tropical country and makes for an atmospheric first few nights.

Finishing on the south or west coast is standard advice for honeymoons because it works. Days become unstructured, the pace drops, and the last stretch of the trip is about being somewhere rather than seeing things.

The south coast around Mirissa, Weligama and Tangalle has the most variety of stays, from small boutique places to full resorts. In the right season the sea is calm, and whale watching runs from Mirissa if you want one more excursion before things go entirely horizontal.

Leave the final days genuinely open. The most common honeymoon regret here is a last week so well-planned that there was no room to simply do nothing together.
